Child and pony: Don’t rush to buy
“Can I have a pony? Please, please! ”Many a parent cannot resist the begging child’s eyes – even if the long-awaited pony has no room on the balcony … DeineTierwelt helps with the overview: That is what prospective pony owners have to consider.
The purchase and box are expensive.
Anyone who is toying with buying a pony should also keep in mind what comes with it: Such an animal costs around 2,500 to 5,000 USD. Depending on the location, stable and service, a box can cause an additional 200 to 500 USD per month. It’s good when water, hay, and straw are included, and only the additional feed has to be paid extra.
There are additional monthly costs.
Routine treatments and vaccinations cost around 250 USD a year at the vet – if there is also an illness, the vet and the medicine increase accordingly. Of course, the blacksmith will also make money for his services, and liability insurance for a month at least 50 USD is also needed (Child and pony).

Equipment and lessons also cost money.
And of course, that wasn’t the expense – ponies and riders, of course, also need equipment: grooming accessories, riding clothes, saddles, bridles, and so on. It is also advisable to take riding lessons. All in all, a few thousand USD can come together.
Alternative 1: a riding participation
If you add it all up – and then, above all, have the pony’s well-being in mind, then actually, only participation in riding is a sensible solution. Two or more people then share the costs and your “own” pony suddenly only costs 50 to 150 USD per month.
Alternative 2: “Rent” a pony in the riding stables
If you are looking for riding participation, you should also ask the riding stable or the pony owners whether other offspring in family or friends could one day take over the rider. In this way, the riding participation is passed on to the next child. Perhaps there is also a riding stable that generally “rents out” ponies. These ponies then have a permanent home in the stables, the riders change, and you can visit the horse there even if you have already grown too big for the pony.
