Known as Berger de Beauce or Bas Rouge, the Beauceron is native to northern France.
It is a breed of dogs that is primarily used for intelligent missions due to its natural strengths.
In addition to being effective as a herd guard, the Beauceron is a beautiful, loyal and calm pet. He is appreciated in the military for special actions.
However, a question often arises for people who are unfamiliar with this breed: is the Beauceron dangerous?
The character of Beauceron
Courageous , protective and affectionate , the Beauceron is a large dog. Its weight reaches 35 kg for females and 50 kg for males. Its height is 70 cm for males and 61 to 68 cm for females. He therefore has an impressive physique when you meet him on the street.
The education of the Beauceron is essential for its development and socialization. It should be noted that this loyal companion becomes aggressive when he finds himself with new dogs when he has not been well socialized.
He is also very suspicious of strangers and if he detects aggressive behavior towards a member of his family, he shows fangs.
Beauceron is also known for its desire to dominate. His behavior as a shepherd pushes him to want to dominate in the home. But, well educated and having sufficient physical activities, he becomes a very obedient dog. It is not for nothing that the army has retained the Beauceron among all dog breeds!
Classification of dogs by category of dangerousness
The law is useful to answer the question: “Is considered dangerous, any dog likely to represent a danger to people and pets.” “
Two main texts regulate the keeping of dangerous animals. The first is the law n ° 99-5 of January 6, 1999, as amended, relating to dangerous and stray animals and the protection of animals.
The second is the law n ° 2008-582 of June 20, 2008 reinforcing the measures of prevention and protection of people against dangerous dogs. They classify dogs into three categories according to their dangerousness. This typology takes into account the recognition of the canine breed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
The first category includes so-called attack dogs not listed in the French Official Book (LOF) of the type:
- American Staffordshire terrier,
- Mastiff
- Tosa.
The second category includes so-called guard and defense dogs , of recognized breeds:
- Staffordshire Terrier,
- American Staffordshire Terrier,
- Tosa,
- Rottweiler registered or not in the LOF
The third class includes the other dogs considered more sociable:
- Boxer,
- Beauceron,
- Mastiff (registered LOF)
You can rejoice! Your Beauceron is part of the third category. It is therefore not considered dangerous.
Do you need a permit to own a Beauceron in France?
The law considers Category 1 dogs to be the most dangerous . Their possession , acquisition, transfer or import is prohibited. Any offender is liable to 6 months imprisonment and a fine of 15,000 euros.
Owners of category 2 dogs are required to obtain a detention permit . It is issued on the basis of a behavioral assessment of the dog and a certificate of aptitude from the keeper. They must be muzzled and kept on a leash by an adult. Failure to comply is punishable by 3 months imprisonment and a fine of 3,750 euros, in addition to the risk of the animal being seized.
The third category is not concerned because it is considered not to be dangerous. You can therefore have a Beauceron in France without a license.
If you are reading this text and do not live in France, check the website of the competent authorities because some countries consider the Beauceron to be a dangerous dog.
